If My Winter Storm had been recorded by someone else than Tarja Turunen, it would probably have been glowing of payback. But she's not a person who lets the passion be heard. She has been the one who has taken the silent road through the infected mess with Nightwish, the successful band who fired Tarja two years ago, with an open letter.

During the years, the indications that Turunen, even though to the fact that she has been singing in a metal band, hasn't had the genre as her own favourite. But nine years has put their traces. The overall feeling is that My Winter Storm has become a compromise - between what the classical trained soprano wants and what you think that the Nightwish fans wants to hear.

Most of the pieces on Turunen's debute album has made by a several external songwriters. Metal meets operavocals, a few songs are softer, many are cinematic. Orchestrals, choirs and heavy arrangements are used, and it is obvious that everything is written for her. Sometimes there are missing a stronger red line other than the voice, which is what the whole album is centered by.

Although the album includes more metal songs, metal isn't the starting line. It has become a Tarja album and not a Nightwish album. Although the album doesn't seem to be very personal. The singer has always been reserved and kept distance. Maybe it is time for her to change that now when she's standing on her own legs.

In September, Nightwish made their debut with their new singer and caught high positions on the lists. Ironically, the biggest flaw with Dark Passion Play and mY Winter Storm are teh same: the uncability to remove songs. Another thing is the ability to make coversongs. I have never liked the songs Nightwish has made covers of, and when Turunen makes Alice Cooper's old song Poison into an operametal, the shivers I feel are by happiness.

If I have to choose between the two albums I will still choose Nightwish's. Although they have taken the easy road and Turunen's is the most brave and ambitious one. She just needs some more time to really find herself.
