Tuomas Holopainen has already for a year been trying to find a singer for Nightwish. The successor to Tarja Turunen will probably come from some foreign country.

NIGHTWISH AND A YEAR WITHOUT TARJA

Heavy-miracle Nightwish has a rocky year behind. The new album is soon ready, but the successor to Tarja Turunen just isn't found. .

On last October Nightwish created a head line chaos of all times. Band was playing on 21. October in the sold-out gig in Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, and after the show the four musicians of the band fired their vocalist Tarja Turunen.
Band hasn't still found the singer. Can't the better than Tarja be found, Nightwish-boss Tuomas Holopainen?
-There are strong candidates, who could fill the boots of Nightwish's vocalist right away, but we have no hurry to do the decision.
There's still time and the band doesn't want to rush in its important decision. When the application period ends in December, the limit of 1500 candidates will probably be reached. There's dozens of different nationality, and that the singer would come from Finland, hasn't been that important for the band.
-Most important is a right kind of person. It depends on a person. That is from Finland haven't been any real trump card, and any extra points haven't been given for that.

The boss of the band isn't really excited to talk about choosing the singer. People have been trying to create a discussion with him about this subject all the time soon nearly for a year.
Outsiders are getting into panic, though there's no reason for it. All the others seem to be more worried about finding the singer that we.
Recordings of the vocals of the forthcoming album are going to be started on the end of February. The decision of the new singer will be done in the beginning of next year - as it have been planned. The identity of the singer will be published only on next summer.
-We'll publish the new singer at the same time as the first single of the new album. I wouldn't be fair, if people talked about her half a year without hearing one single note her singing. She'll be under a huge pressure, so we did this decision.
Tuomas high lights that they don't want to tease anyone by keeping the identity of the singer secret.
-The meaning isn't to be mean to fans, but to protect the new singer.

Holopainen tells that new singer candidates still appear everyday.
-The amount of candidates is huge. They are a lot more than I ever could have imagined. This will absolutely be the most important decision in Nightwish career. It really isn't just my decision, but what the whole band wants. We seem to have same taste in this thing.
Both Finnish and international singer candidates visited in the heart of Häme on the summer. Nightwish was six weeks on summer camp rehearsing new music. The strongest candidates have been met and got to know them better. It's still clear, that Nightwish can think the right decision for ages, but only the weeks spent on tour tell if the new person will adjust to the group.
-Six months sitting in a bus might bring up new sides, but we have to take that risk. We have to remember that this is only a rock band. It's no more that that.
This is still that interesting process that Nightwish was proposed to make a reality tv program about searching a new singer. -I didn't have to think even two seconds to say no.

The founder, songmaker and keyboard player of Nightwish has also become a figurehead, when the band hasn't a vocalist for that.
-I feel it’s my duty to tell about band's things, but I'm trying to draw a line that my own life wouldn't end at the same time. I want to protect my privacy, but every time I just don't manage to do it.
A year ago firing the vocalist was followed by weeks lasted media chaos that Tuomas ended on December. He shut everything else outside and withdrew to his home in Kitee. The songmaker dived from day to day, from month to another again and again to there, where world's sorrows change to music.
-I realized more concrete that ever, what making music means to me. It was so condition for life as ever could be. It helped over the worst. I don't know what would have happened to my head, if I couldn't have made songs then. Music was the only and best way to escape the disconsolateness, the feeling of lost and bad feeling I felt then. I created my own world and hideaway from all that was going on back then. I've realized I've become dependent on making music. Nothing helps to the bad feeling inside my head like writing a song.
The new album has been done for a year now. Tuomas composed the songs everyday from December to the spring. On the summer the band was six weeks on a summer camp rehearsing the songs and making a demo, and now they are already in the studio.
-A year has passed by quickly.

Making songs took much more time and energy than any other album, but on the other hand, the new one was the easiest to create.
-There was so much dramatic and emotions. The feelings cascaded into the songs. The music is only emotions. On a normal week-day when happens nothing, new songs are hard to make. Sorrow, longing and pain have created my best songs, but good songs can be made also with good feelings. The new album isn't either just sad, there's also some more positive songs. There's also a song that rises in my personal grading system to number one Tuomas reveals.
On the spring the songs for the new album were made; 15 songs from which about 12 will end up to the album.
This amount of songs in few months is really much for me. All the time new songs were born one after another. In this album can be heard the real different sides. In music as well as in lyrics is really heavy and dark stuff, but also a couple of the happiest song we've ever done.
-I've always been a huge Scottish fan and liked Celtic music, so now in the music can be heard the Celtic influence. And there's also some other surprises coming, Holopainen describes.
The orchestra parts of the last album Once were recorded in London, in a studio that has now been demolished to a parking place. Pip Williams, who was also making Once, choose this time Abbey Road-studios for recording.
-There is its own feeling, though I'm not a great Beatles-fan. The name of the recording place will at least look good in the album cover.
On Once there was nearly 100 members in the orchestra. Now Pip Williams will book for the recordings at least 170 musicians, maybe even more.
-For few songs we need a choir - and also a bit bigger choir and more bombastic orchestra. The amount isn't the reason; we just do what is needed to do for music, without we should do any compromises.

The past year has changed Tuomas pretty much. Some of the changes can be seem easily.
-I've always thought myself as a solitary soul. I like to be alone and I can cope with myself. But after all this what happened, I realized that however, no one can survive in this world alone. It feels good to notice that I have my family's, band's and friend's support and acceptance. With that I can go on, nothing else doesn't even matter that much, Tuomas thinks.
-The experience taught that I don't stress so much about little things. Things that I used to approach a bit naively, I can now look in a different way. Would I even dare to use such a scary word as I've somehow matured during all this.
On Christmas day will be 30 years from the birth of the youngest child of Holopainen's family. Tuomas doesn’t' see in himself any signs of age crises.
-To reach the age of 30 doesn’t feel anything special. I try to pass my birthday as calm as possible. I'll let the Peter Pan-syndrome go on. Let's celebrate then someday for example my 50-year-old-birthday.
