Once he had a dream

Kiss me while your lips are still red. This is what Tuomas Holopainen says in the theme song of Markku Pölönen’s new film.

Tuomas Holopainen’s one dream has fulfilled. Having dreamt long for making music for a film, the composer got finally his chance when Markku Pölönen asked him to the team of the movie Lieksa! that will have its premiere in September. Pölönen has made earlier movies like Kivenpyörittäjän kylä [English title: The Last Wedding, literaly: The Stoneroller’s Village] and Kuningasjätkä [English title: A Summer By The River, literaly: The Lumberjack King]. A music video was filmed in Pyhäselkä, Hammaslahti, on the set of Pölönen’s movie.
“I have always wanted to make film music although this can’t truely be called true film music. This is more like a theme song.” Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboardist and composer of Nightwish, tells.
The song made for the movie, While Your Lips Are Still Red is a love theme, a heartbreaking lesson for seizing the day, the story of movie characters, Lara and Kasper.
“I have always liked heavy ballads. For example the Scorpions have good songs. So I asked Tuomas to make some music.” Pölönen explains.
“They are like the mother and father of heavy ballads.” the vocalist of the song composed by Holopainen, Nightwish basist Marco Hietala states.
“I wanted to capture some Eastern Finnish melancholy in that song. The Scorpions couldn't have done that.” Holopainen reflects.
“I made such hooks in the lyrics that can be understood only after seeing the movie, Lara’s dark hair and other things, too.”

No need to spare from seizing the day
Also the title of the song is taken from the movie lines.
“It was said in one of the lines in the movie script that kiss me while your lips are still red. It's a good lesson.” Holopainen ponders.
“Yes, it's time to live now.” Pölönen chimes in.
“It doesn't pay to spare.” Holopainen continues.
“If only the girls in the home village had realized that in the youth!” Hietala laughs.
“On the other hand, one wouldn't be in this line of business in that case. One gets to compensate afterwards like this.”

At an easy space, along with the album
Even though Nightwish has had a break from touring for a year and a half that time hasn’t been used for holidaying. “When we finished at the Hartwall Arena, we just took few weeks off.” Hietala thinks back.
“No, that was when we gave interviews.” Holopainen specifies.
“The time has gone with other jobs, side projects, even though Tarot can’t be considered as a side project as far as Marco is concerned.”
“There has been so much to do that time has almost been running out and I have nearly lost my head many times.
Somehow I have still been able to pull everything together in the final phase.” Hietala says.
The film music was recorded in a way along with the Nightwish’s new album to be released in the fall.
“We took an advantage of the fact that the recordings of our own album were still unfinished.” Holopainen tells.
“It has helped that we have made the album at a rather easy pace. We have had time for other things, too.” Hietala adds.
“The recordings have gone quite nicely in other respects, too. It was only when practising this piece with a few beers lending wings in the previous evening that I sang “kiss me while your eyes are still red” and then it hardly hit the right note at all in the actual recordings.” Hietala laughs.

Music as images; images as music
Tuomas Holopainen has already told before that he hears images as music and sees music as images.
“Every song I’ve ever made is actually a kind of miniature movie. I got along even with this project so that I got both the script and few raw clips of the movie. I started to think with them what kind of music there could be.” Holopainen says. “Now I must say a cliched clause inbetween, namely that the music has really inspired us in making this movie.” Pölönen admits. “It works the other way around, too: those pictures, video clips, really inspired me to make this music.” Holopainen returns the compliment. “Since this music video has now been shot, how can we get the same atmosphere in the movie itself?” Pölönen ponders the rest of the shooting days in his mind. “We are trying to finish these trailers by the early summer. If they could make their way straight to the Music Television that would be great!

The revival of Nightwish Holopainen and Hietala will turn their thoughts from sideprojects to Nightwish for good at the latest in the fall. The single Eva, which was made for charity, will be released in the spring and in the same bustle the name of the new vocalist will be announced.
In the fall Nightwish will board a tour bus again and head to the States among other places, supported by Paradise Lost. Does the music of movie Lieksa! give some taste of the future of Nightwish, too?
“Well, the songs While Your Lips Are Still Red and Eva are relatives, sort of.” Holopainen says.
“Even more sensitive stuff is becoming, still even this song will reveal the more sensitive side of Marco.” “But there's certainly testosterone in this song and voice, too, even if they're sensitized a bit.” Pölönen analyzes.
“Well, maybe it's a bit like shooting down the idea of me drinking blood from the sculls of my enemies in the Walhalla.” Hietala jokes.
The choise of the vocalist has been handled a lot in public and these rumours have been regularly shot down on the band website. It’s useless to continue speculating about the future vocalist as she will be announced at the same time with releasing Eva.
“I think there were some discussions on the net forums in some phase that Nightwish shouldn’t take anyone new in it but I should do all the singing.” Hietala tells. “I took a stand against it right from the beginning, I wouldn't go for it.”
“As far as I am concerned, I didn’t consider it even a microsecond! No offence.” Holopainen laughs off.
