An Opera Debut In Olavinlinna Castle

Musicals may become Tarja Turunen's best area

Savonlinna. Very rare singers have a chance to make their debut as a solist of an opera concert at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, but Tarja Turunen was lucky enough to make it.
She admits herself that without the success of Nightwish and the media hype around them there would never have been a chance; the road to Olavinlinna usually takes somewhat different turns.
Tarja Turunen did not perform in a full opera, but in a cross-over concert together with the artistic manager of the festival, Raimo Sirkiä.
The program was a mix of opera arias, Nightwish songs arranged for an orchestra and musical tunes. Musicals might be the most appropriate area for the lyrical soprano of Tarja Turunen.
Her voice is at it's most beautiful in lower registers, where her voice has a rich full tone. At the same time the power of her voice is a bit low but within the musical area this really won't be problem. While moving into higher tunes the pressure grows and more dramatic layers enter her voice decreasing the softness.
Turunen also has an extremely accurate ear. This was shown not only in musical songs but in the opera arias: Especially in Giacomo Puccini's aria "O mio babbino caro" from the opera "Gianni Schicci" her intervals hit accurately the point.
They used electric amplification in all songs which makes it impossible to estimate the power of her voice accurately. It is a known fact that Raimo Sirkiä's tenor has enough power to pass even through the Wagnerian orchestral forces. Microphones brought advantage to Sirkiä too, since the orchestra was located on stage instead of the pit and some electric instruments were included.
The biggest applauds he got from his CCR-classic "Proud Mary", but in his opera picks he was at home. He also sang a couple of Nightwish-songs, but it was obvious that those were not too familiar to him yet.
The clearest cross-over at the concert were the rock songs arranged for the symphony orchestra. Arrangements made by Kalevi Olli and the conductor Riku Niemi showed two different styles of arrangements, because where Olli favored more traditional orchestration Niemi mixed different instrumental worlds together.
Both ways had a point. Nightwish songs "Two for The Tragedy" and "Angels Fall First" arranged by Olli were balanced versions, but on the other hand the naive archaisms of the "Moondance"-instrumental - which were emphasized even more when played by a symphony orchestra - reminded "Stonehenge" from the movie "Spinal Tap".
"Beauty Of The Beast" arranged by Riku Niemi brought a rock combo behind the Kuopio City Orchestra. A good idea but difficult to make work in practice. The musical aims of a symphony orchestra and a rockband are so different that very seldom a satisfactory mix can be achieved. This time the sound blurred again.
